with Girls Write Nashville

Girls Write Nashville is a creative community where teen artists develop their voices through songwriting, production, mentorship, and collaboration. We’re always looking for adults who want to be part of that mission — whether as volunteer supporters or teaching artists working directly with students.

Musician/Artist Volunteer Roles

Volunteer artist mentors and facilitators support our students by showing up as consistent, creative adults in their lives. Whether co-writing a song, giving feedback on a beat, or just holding space during group share-outs, these roles are about encouragement and connection.

  • Coach a high school artist one-on-one through Girls Write Nashville’s All City Mentorship Program (January–May)!

Mentors support students in songwriting, music production, fostering creative communities, confidence-building, and positive youth development through ongoing relationship and collaboration.

Our mentors say they wish they had this program when they were teens, and it’s a powerful way to connect to their art, to their own inner teen, and to a intergenerational community of likeminded artists!

    Duties:

    • Meet virtually one hour/month with your assigned mentee to support their artistic growth and help them stay on track with this intermediate-advanced program.

    • Serve as a mentor for 1-2 “Mentor Coach-a-thon” breakout sessions where you’ll meet with several students from the program 1:1 for short, one-time mentor sessions.

    • Encourage creative expression in a positive, inclusive environment

    Time Commitment:

    • Program occurs January–May 2026

    • Monthly 60 min (or bi-weekly 30 min) virtual mentor meetings

    • Two 90-min cohort sessions during which you’ll provide your Coach-a-thon sessions. Scheduled during one of our bi-weekly regular program meetings per your availability.

    • 2-hour mandatory mentor training before program start

    • Due to the importance of the 1:1 mentor relationship, we ask mentors to commit to the entire season of a program

    Experience/Skillset

    • Passion for youth voice, creative expression, and mentorship

    • Background in songwriting, music production, or a related creative field

    • Strong communication and active listening skills

    • Experience working with teens or in youth-serving spaces is a plus, though not required

    • Reliable, responsive, and excited to participate in the GWN mission!

  • Provide one-on-one or small group recording and production support to high school students participating in the All City Mentorship Program. Mentors help students turn their songwriting and production ideas into finished demos while developing confidence in using recording tools.

    Duties:

    • Support students during cohort meetings, project development, and recording sessions

    • Offer creative and technical guidance in DAWs or home-studio setups

    Time Commitment:

    • January–May 2026

    • 2-hour mandatory mentor training before program start

    • Attend at least two 90-min cohort sessions

    • Assist in end-of-program DIY recording session (end of April)

    Experience/Skillset

    • Proficiency in home recording and pro DAWs such as Protools, Logic and home recording DAWs such as Garageband and Bandlab

    • Experience with songwriting, beat-making, or demo production

    • Patience, flexibility, and a collaborative spirit

    • Prior teaching or mentoring experience is a plus but not required

  • Help MNPS middle school students record demo versions of their original songs! Demo Engineers work alongside Girls Write staff in after school programs to set up simple recording stations and coach students through the recording process.

    Duties:

    • Operate basic recording equipment and/or DAW software such as Garageband, Bandlab, Logic, or Protools

    • Guide students through recording vocals and instruments

    • Encourage creative exploration and confidence while recording their original music

    • Organize and manage session files to be sent to mix engineer

    Time Commitment:

    • Flexible and available to assist during afterschool (3:45–6:15 PM) and/or in-school daytime programming

    • General availability during March - April, when these recording sessions typically take place

    • Participate in volunteer training

    • Facilitate at least two recording sessions over March-April

    Experience/Skillset

    • Basic familiarity with recording tools and DAWs (GarageBand, BandLab, Logic, or Pro Tools, etc.)

    • Comfort setting up simple recording stations (mics, interfaces, headphones)

Paid Teaching Artist Roles

Empower the next generation of artists through songwriting, production, and creative mentorship.

Girls Write Nashville is building a community of musicians, producers, and educators who are passionate about working with youth — especially those from communities historically excluded from the arts. Whether you're just starting out or bring years of experience, we offer paid training, flexible opportunities, and a pathway to lead your own programs.

Teaching Artists lead or assist youth in creating original music through songwriting, production, and creative collaboration. Using Girls Write Nashville’s trauma-informed, culturally responsive curriculum, you’ll facilitate group sessions that foster artistic growth, build confidence, and create space for youth voice and self-expression. Depending on the opportunity, you might guide students through writing and recording a song, support a one-time workshop, or lead a long-term afterschool program. All roles include trauma-informed training, curriculum support, and collaboration with Girls Write Nashville staff. Teaching Artists help students feel seen, heard, and empowered through music.

We are currently hiring for the following positions with opportunities for growth:

  • Substitute Teaching Artists – Step in as-needed for existing teaching artists in school-based programs during absences (short-term or multi-week).

  • Workshop Teaching Artists – Facilitate or assist with one-off songwriting or creative workshops and/or short workshop series of up to 8 meetings.

New Teaching Artists begin with paid training and shadowing opportunities. Once trained, in addition to being eligible to substitute teach, and teach workshops, you will also be eligible to be considered for future paid teaching artist opportunities, including leading full length/yearlong (15-28 weeks) programs that meet 1-2 times a week.

We anticipate launching multiple 8-week programs in Spring 2026 and yearlong programs in the 2026–2027 school year, and trained Teaching Artists in our network will be considered first.

These roles are ideal for educators, musicians, and community artists who value youth voice, creative expression, collaboration, and trauma-informed facilitation.
